27 or 32 inches? Size is not the right question

Two monitors of different sizes can display exactly the same workspace — or the same number of pixels with opposite sharpness. What really decides is density: the number of pixels per inch. Here is how to choose without going wrong.

The essentials

The rule in three lines

If you only remember one thing before ordering.

  • 27 inches: the safest format. In 5K it reaches 218 ppi — Retina density — at the lowest price in the high-density range. It is the default choice for a workstation.
  • 32 inches: excellent in 6K, acceptable in 4K, never in between. In 6K you keep Retina sharpness with a third more space; in 4K you drop to 139 ppi, which stays comfortable but is no longer Retina at all.
  • 21:9 (34 and 40 inches): to be chosen for width, not for fineness. A single monitor replaces two side by side, without the bezel in the middle.

The 4K 32-inch trap

This is the most common confusion. A 32-inch 4K displays as many pixels as a 27-inch 4K, but spread over a larger surface: density falls from 163 to 139 ppi. In practice everything looks bigger, and the grain of the image becomes noticeable if you sit close to the screen.

Is that a fault? Not necessarily. At 139 ppi the interface reads perfectly at 100%, with no scaling at all: you therefore have a real workspace of 3840 × 2160, which is considerable. It is the right choice for anyone who wants plenty of room and a large image, and the wrong choice for anyone after crisp text.

The conclusion is simple: at 32 inches, if sharpness matters, you have to move to 6K.

How far away do you work?

Density is never judged in absolute terms, but relative to your viewing distance. Three reference points:

  • Shallow desk, monitor at 50 cm: a 32-inch forces you to sweep the room with your eyes. The 27-inch is more comfortable, and its high density is fully appreciated at that distance.
  • Standard desk, monitor at 70 cm: the 32-inch comes into its own, and the density gap between 4K and 6K becomes less visible — without disappearing on fine text.
  • Monitor on an arm, set back beyond a metre: large formats and 21:9 become natural.

One large monitor or two monitors?

The question mainly arises from 32 inches upwards. Two 27-inch monitors offer more total surface and let you dedicate one screen to a task; they do impose a bezel in the centre of your field of view and two sets of settings to align.

A 40-inch 21:9 like the P40K offers 5120 pixels of width on a single panel: that is the width of two 27-inch monitors, without the break. For video editing, a wide spreadsheet or a development environment, the difference in comfort is real. For compartmentalised work — video call on one side, documents on the other — two separate monitors remain more practical.

And the footprint?

A 27-inch is about 62 cm wide, a 40-inch 21:9 nearly 96 cm. Measure your desk before ordering: it is trivial, and yet it is the leading cause of returns. Think about the available depth too, since a large monitor needs distance to be comfortable.
