The real price of a Retina monitor
The price shown is rarely the price you pay: you have to add the stand, sometimes the glass, possibly customs, and divide it by the number of years the monitor will serve. Let us do the calculation honestly, options included.
The five items people forget
- The stand. Depending on the brand, it is included, partly included, or charged separately. The Studio Display 2026 includes a tilting stand in its starting price; the height-adjustable version remains a paid option. At Kuycon, the monitor comes with its VESA adapter and the stand is ordered in a pack or separately, from €49.90.
- The glass treatment. Nano-textured is a paid option at Apple. In the Kuycon range, matte and glossy anti-reflective coexist at the same price: it is a choice, not a premium.
- The cables. Often absent or limited to one. Kuycon monitors come with USB-C, DisplayPort and HDMI cables, plus two USB-C to USB-A adapters.
- Customs and VAT. This is the item that surprises people most on a purchase outside the European Union. Kuycon deliveries within the EU are DDP: duties and taxes paid, and the price shown is the price paid. Outside the EU, shipping is DAP and local taxes apply on receipt.
- Lifespan. This is the most important line, and nobody writes it on a label.

The real cost is calculated over time
A well-chosen desk monitor lasts eight to ten years. A computer, four to five. In other words, your monitor will outlive one, or even two machines — provided it is not welded to one of them, which was the tragedy of the all-in-one iMac.
Reduced to a yearly figure, a €940 monitor used for eight years comes to about €120 a year: less than a monthly software subscription. The question is therefore less "is it expensive?" than "will I still be happy with it in five years?". That is what justifies not going too low down the range on the panel, and not paying for features you will never use.
Three mistakes that cost more than the monitor
- Buying too low in density. A 27-inch 4K with a Mac is 163 ppi instead of 218: a few hundred euros saved, and slightly blurry text for eight years. It is the most common regret.
- Buying too large for your desk. A 32-inch at 50 cm from your eyes is endured more than it is enjoyed. Measure first: it is free, and it is the leading cause of returns.
- Paying twice for the same feature. A built-in camera and six speakers have real value — if you do not already own a webcam and a headset. Otherwise it is a premium for duplicate hardware.
What the low price does not fund
For balance: a significant price gap is always explained by something. In this case, it is explained by a direct purchasing channel, the absence of a camera and speakers, an optional stand and a reduced marketing budget — the detail is in how Kuycon monitors are made.
It is not explained by the panel, which comes from the same panel makers as those of the major brands. Two things, however, cannot be bought at this price: the resale value of an Apple product, which is considerably higher, and software integration with the system. If you resell your hardware every three years, the real gap narrows.
The calculation to make before ordering
Add up the complete configuration
Monitor + stand + cables + glass options. It is the only figure comparable from one brand to another.
Check what is included in the box
VESA adapter, cables, remote control. Those accessories bought separately quickly add up to several tens of euros.
Check the tax treatment
A purchase outside the European Union may add VAT and duties on receipt. With DDP, everything is already paid.
Divide by eight years
And ask yourself the only right question: will this monitor still suit me in five years, with the machine I have not yet bought?
FAQ
Budget: frequently asked questions
Are there customs charges to allow for?
Not within the European Union: deliveries are DDP, duties and taxes paid, and the price shown is the price you pay. Outside the European Union, shipping is DAP and local taxes may apply on receipt.
Is the stand included in the price?
The monitor comes with its VESA 100 × 100 adapter and its cables; the adjustable stand is ordered in a pack with the monitor or separately, from €49.90. That choice avoids charging it to those who already use a desk arm.
How long do people keep a monitor?
Eight to ten years for a well-chosen model, against four to five for a computer. That is what makes the calculation interesting: a €940 monitor used for eight years comes to about €120 a year, and it will outlive one or two machines.
Should you factor in resale?
If you renew your hardware every three years, yes: an Apple monitor resells better and faster, which reduces the real gap. If you keep your hardware to the end, that argument does not apply.
What should you absolutely not economise on?
Pixel density. A panel too low in density for its size — typically a 27-inch in 4K with a Mac — is paid for every day for years, in exchange for a few hundred euros saved once.
